About Best Friends

Our group's Service Learning Site for the Spring of 2016 semester is the Best Friends organization through Bridgepointe at Ashgrove Woods, in Nicholasville, Kentucky. Bridgepointe at Ashgrove Woods is a Christian Care Community which offers assisted care for seniors, designed to help families grow closer as they grow older. The community offers fulfilling and rich lifestyles for its residents and guests, promoting activity, interaction, socialization, and enjoyment. Bridgepointe offers three types of services: Assisted Senior Care, Memory Care, and Adult Day Center.

The Assisted Senior Care "blends the dignity of private apartments with the peace of mind of assistance, providing seniors with support and services needed to live independent and fulfilling lifestyles in a vibrant, homelike environment."

Memory Care is "for those with Alzheimer's disease and other memory challenges."

Adult Day Center "offers services designed for adults who need assistance with daily living as a result of physical or mental impairments. Guests enjoy the company of peers and stimulating activities amid [their] safe, home-like environment."

As volunteers at Bridgepointe, we will be partaking in the Best Friends approach, which emphasizes that relationships are essential in being able to provide the best, most compassionate care. To build these relationships, there are some essential components which Best Friends considers to be the building blocks of its model for care. These components include:

  • Respect
  • Empathy
  • Support
  • Trust
  • Humor

Throughout the semester, as we volunteer our time with Bridgepointe, we hope to adopt the Best Friends model, and to be able to become best friends for the individuals we will meet and work with.
